I wanted to write an SCP about my town's fire station, which used to be a library. I got stuck on the latter half, though, and decided to run with it.

What's the name of your town? I'm currently working on a project where I map SCPs, and I'd rather be specific instead of just saying it's in England.

See, here I was, all ready to upvote the thing that used to be a library, obviously because it used to be a library. Then I got to the addendum, and saw how it was chalk-full of stuff that definitely belongs an a former library, and by beliefs were cemented.
+1 to the thing that is most certainly a former library.
This shouldn't be nearly as entertaining and funny yet unsettling to read as it is. You keep pulling off these fantastic format screws, particularly ones pertaining to former libraries. Props to you.
On a side-note, this page should probably be locked to prevent people from fixing intentional errors, given that it was formerly a library.

So it doesn't change "hazardous waste pit" to something library related. Why "Dewey radiation"?

Ha ha. No really what is Dewey radiation standing for and why does the effect censor some things (Dewey radiation, book binding machines) and not the others (shrine, waste pit). There seems to be a clue here, but I can't figure it out.
My guess about the rads is that it's relating it to the Dewey Decimal System, a common way to classify and organize books in libraries, former or otherwise.
Yes, but that's just more obfuscation of what is there. Is it Cherenkov and "library patrons" are nuclear reactors? That seems to be the obvious radiation released by damage to a thing.
Edit: It occurs to me that you are being really clever here and writing about something else but then obfuscating it with talk of classification and organization. If you are, my apologies for being dense, but message not received.
I actually have no idea what's behind those "censors", and whether they were added to any particular thing is, from my perspective, arbitrary. If you can think of some internal logic for it, I'd love to hear it.

Scrolling through the comments and saw this. A day late, but I think it's important to mention that Cherenkov radiation is not common to malfunctioning reactors/damaged power plants in particular - it's actually just plain common to reactors, and sometimes even radioactive substances like cesium-137, which I would not recommend holding for too long.
If you look into a research reactor (ones used for power are pretty much sealed off completely, unless you need to do some serious maintenance) which is perfectly safe to do while it's operating because of how much water is between you and the fuel rods, you will see Cherenkov radiation.
Yeah, I realized that later. I am not sure what Dewey radiation ought to be otherwise though. Any ideas?
If the footnote read "A type of radiation common to nuclear reactors. It is typically only emitted into the environment by damage to safety systems." or something, would it work better?
My default answer would be neutrons/neutron radiation, or maybe gamma rays. I'm not quite sure. This article really just confused me, which is why I upvoted it.
If there's a hazardous waste pit, then I guess it could be any ionizing radiation, given that no exact type of radioactive waste is specified. I would only think it had to do with nuclear reactors if they were spent fuel rods down there… but it could be gamma rays, alpha or beta particles, neutrons, x-rays… man, I got nothin'. :I am thinking that "damaged" is uncensored because "damaged library patrons" isn't normal, that's what got me thinking about reactors as something that emits dangerous radiation when damaged.
Thaums and thaumic radiation. As a former library, the building would have been exposed to L-Space, which is well known for bleeding thaums into the surrounding environment. Active libraries have special shielding in the walls to minimize the impact of this thaum-bleed but that shielding tends to break down over the years, so the thaumic bleedover from L-Space likely created a waste pit.

In-universe: the effect isn't perfectly consistent.
Out-of-universe: I didn't want to skirt around the fact this former library has a hazardous waste pit, because that's kind of the stinger.

Items that force the writer to refer to it as something goofy are starting to wear thin on me, I must admit. However, this was a lot of fun, well-written, and the addendum was a pretty nice twist. And hell, it made me smile. +1
It's still "[ACCESS DENIED]" in the mainlist. Shouldn't it be a former library or something?

Honestly, all libraries should have dungeons and torture devices to punish people who don't pay fines. You're renting these books, not purchasing them.
Wait, why did I just assume all libraries didn't have dungeons? Weird.
On topic, agreeing with other people who say that this shouldn't be nearly as creepy or entertaining as it is. Anything that can make me smile ans give me goosebumps at the same time deserves a good +1.
