First SCP attempt, many thanks to Mistbourne, sirpudding, Hihahaba and Adam Grey.
Cool concept that ties in infinity storage space, pi, and similar concepts. It might be a bit dull due to not addressing how it was used, but it got me interested.
Thank you! :) Could you elaborate, please - "how it was used"?
Why was it made? What intentions were there behind the object? Are there more of it?
Ah - right. There's a brief mention of that, but I see what you mean.
This threatens to be interesting, and stops before it can be. I really wish the connection on The Edge was elaborated, because as it is from my perspective, it seems arbitrary.
No vote.
To be honest, it was sort of arbitrary. It was decided early on that the disc needed some sort of audio content, and I decided on The Edge because the nickname sort of goes with the effect of the disc. There's more potential there - I see what you're getting at.
The disc should also have a jam session between Evans and guitarist Saul Hudson.
I'm a huge fan of Saul Hudson, and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this.
Given the commentary from MrWrong and Decibelles, I'm considering a self-delete to bring this back to the sandbox. Voters - if you have / are going to downvote, would more story as per their suggestions change your mind, or is your downvote more of a core problem with the article / concept / what-have-you?
*Very* tiny edit - un-redacted the Site location. It belongs at 15.
I feel like this doesn't go far enough. It's got the basic concept down, but doesn't explore it much and needs to be expanded on. Like Deci said, I'd like to see some expansion on the connection to The Edge. I think you have the effect down, and that doesn't need to be expanded on much. What I'd like to see is more into how and why this was made, in addition to the content already here. The last addenda doesn't add much, so I'd cut that entirely or summarize it to a detail rather than an entire addenda.
Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!
Thanks, Roget. I've been thinking along similar lines. Since this SCP has survived the first few days, I think I'm not going to self-delete, but use addenda and judicious inline edits to fill out the story. Sort of how it would work in real documentation - new information comes in, you append the documentation. Mirror my own understanding and the growth of the story - as improved by the comments herein and my own notions - by reflecting it in the SCP.
To all: I'm a systems administrator, so a fair bit of my job is writing technical documentation. But knocking off the rust on the part of my brain that writes fiction is a huge part of why I applied to the Foundation: to become a better writer. Please do keep the comments coming - I'm loving how the collaborative/review aspect of this community works; it's exactly what I was looking for! :)
Anyway, that's what I'd like to do. Is this a proper way of improving a SCP, or should I self-delete and go back to sandbox?
We already have a disc object with invincible cutting ability.
Better containment procedure: a mounted, threaded metal rod to go thtough the central hole of the CD, and two nuts with washers to keep it suspended in the air.
The diameter of the rod should ve about as large as the hole, and the nuts and washers, when tightened, will keep it from accidentally being dislodged, while allowing enough space for it to be handled with tongs whike avoiding the non-cutting edge.
… that setup might also make a good makeshift weapon in the event of a breach or assault by a GoI.
I agree that this should be Safe, though I upvoted regardless because that was really the only thing that bugged me. Maybe also the fact that 100 kPa would be chosen because it is easy to maintain, not because mildly higher/lower pressure would harm the object or containment. The durability concerns are a bit weird for an object that apparently carved through the floor without harm.
Despite those quibbles, my upvote comes from the fact that this is a technically OK SCP with a novel concept (we don't have many reality-to-digital convertors, and none this literal that I recall?). I would be happy to see appropriate edits regarding the other stuff.
I would somewhat contradict the prior posts by saying that the brevity is an asset. A simple anomalous object is not likely to get dozens of upvotes (unless it's SCP-018 or something, making it a "classic"). But a novel, brief idea is a way better addition than something that goes on and on (and on) without a clear focus. So, personally, don't give this thing a backstory unless you put your heart into it. A mysterious "this just happened somehow" origin is, or should be, the norm here.
