I dunno. I can vibe with a guy who makes club remixes of cows but I'm just not enthused by the ending to all this just being 'Soylent Green is people'.
Yeah it feels like there are two separate things going on here. The "your food is something weird but is only concealed by an anomalous effect" part has been done before and better.
Big 'Beef and Dairy Network' vibes here. The interview log felt as natural as a conversation about fake beef can feel. Very fun read!

On the one hand, the idea of a man who doesn't believe cows exist and is trying to make them, but is failing is something inherently hilarious - and the conversation about fake beef is simply hilarious.
However, I'm a little disappointed by the twist just being "Soylent Green is people". The "your food is something weird concealed by anomalous effect" has been done before on this site and it has been done better. It feels pointless and a little silly. It's not a "Oh my god, this is horrifying" reveal, it's a "tacked-on just to be weird" reveal.
Might I enquire to Westrin what exactly is going on? I've read it three times and I can't figure it out.
Novote. I have to follow up with the "great premise, disappointing ending" crowd. The idea cows don't exist, or at least in the mind of this man they don't exist, is pretty great, and someone trying to "make cows" as a conclusion of that is good…but the ending is unsatisfactory and has been done better.
I feel the exact opposite! I really don't get how people see the ending as "your food is something weird concealed by anomalous effect" cause to me…
it reads like there's a secret organization that has tricked everyone (Foundation included) into believing cows really exist.
Except, the twist is pretty much "your food is something weird concealed by anomalous effect" - it's "beef is human flesh concealed by anomalous effect". As for the conspiracy angle, nothing said the ending couldn't have both.
There's nothing wrong with a conspiracy angle… however, it feels like it should be weirder, fitting with the feel of the rest of the SCP; say, cows are actually an artificial lifeform created by sheep. Or cows are actually aliens, using our dependence on them to terraform the Earth to their liking.
