A little bit of potentially useful + a whole lot of "I want one!" -> a downvote.
Okay, a few ideas to up the currently-nonexistant horror factor:
1) Time lag is very pronouced - trips take longer, lag increases as use increases.
2) Less reliable returns - the average trip is 5 to 15 stops, but some end up at 75-100 stops, and some don't bother with the stops and just have a time limit.
3) Life - I specifically chose to exclude any sort of life on these planets, but if it helps, some flesh-eating bacteria could be of use in an after-action report or something.
But, I do feel that these are a bit of a shoehorn. I mean, from a civilian perspective, it could be scary as it is: you're stuck in a van, alone, on the other side of the galaxy, with no way to contact home, for extended periods of time.
Thoughts? Other suggestions?
Man heck with the people who think this is too useful or fun or whatever. It is weird and imagination provoking. Making it a trippy hippy van is awesome. I love this SCP.
Sorts is right. This is one of the few nonhorror articles that actually work.
Oh, to be sure, it is neat and trippy and thought-provoking. I just don't think it quite fits on the list. But I'm also in the minority on this one, so, good job, Djoric.
The van could take the occupants to other dimensions at random intervals in which case the occupants would not be safe from the external environment because mere visual observation could cause a mental breakdown.
Also, should you make the van visit inhabited planets, those planets should almost invariably be hostile or fatal to the occupants within. This would of course require d-class to be the only occupants of the van.
I upvoted this. I think it is a fantastic start. I agree with your choice of lag time and number of stops, as well as your choice not to have life…SO FAR. :-)
I would recommend NOT changing these, at least not very often. What I personally think could be added are more exploration logs. I don't think space exploration has to be scary, and I get a bit annoyed that the standard Hollywood take on it is that it must necessarily be scary. I'm a fan of Star Trek, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Sixty Symbols, and Zemeckis' movie Contact (based on Sagan's book) is extremely near and dear to me. And all of these overall support an optimistic outlook on exploration. Like all human exploration in the past, it's an exciting risk.
That being said, explore away. The Foundation could discover bizarre star formations, unique localized phenomena, exotic gravitational forces, special substances (e.g., there is, in real life, a veritable gold mine on Titan, one of Saturn's moons — oceans and oceans of natural gas), and possibly, at some point, some signs of intelligent design.
I think it's a great start. Just explore some more! =]
I like this one. A lot. A whole lot more original than the Pizza Box and a lot less annoying than Tickle Monster1
…How have they explored these planets? I see that the vehicle is safe within, but how do they measure the outside temperature and environment without (over)killing themselves? I'm assuming by sticking probes out the windows?
Its a lot less LOL-OMG-AWEZUM than the Vending Machine or Coffee Machines. I personally think it's connected to Eric, it seems like something he'd trounce around in during his early 20s.
Yeah, they just remote control probes out the back door. If it's reasonably safe, like 907-A, they will walk around a bit. Most of the time the data is from within a hundred yards of the van.
@Felgraf - Good point. Adding.
…
I *love* pizza box and tickle monster! I'd actually like a "positive SCP" collection to wash out your mind after reading stuff like SCP-231 (don't judge meeeeeeee).
Those articles have their own discussion pages, and there is a "general" section on the forums. This is the discussion page for SCP-907. Hint, hint.
I'd like to know just how it was found.
I'd also like to see what happens if there is some kind of problem with the van while it's all space-trippin'.
The tape deck only plays Beatles from the 70s, oddly.
This…is one of the best new SCPs i've read in a long time man. Very, very impressed.
Given feedback, I'm probably going to add an open-to-edit test log in the next few days.
Expect my contributions.
if your reading this your gay
Please don't. We already have a bunch of lolawesome test log SCP articles, and there's really nothing a log can add to this.
Yeah, I can't think of anything to be gained by test logs describing other planets. It's weird to consider, but best to keep this piece nice and pithy
I'm imagining the hippy who previously owned this thing saying something like "Hey man, let me tell you about this awesome road trip I went on. We like, went to outer space and junk."
And then there's this beatnick with him who says "Cool, daddy-o." And then they smoke a joint or something.
The moral of this story is that just beacuse an SCP is weird but not too scary, doesn't mean it isn't bad that outdated slang is fun to write and that I should not make posts on the internet this late at night.
