While this is reliant on the GoI format it sprung from, there is ultimately a story of its own to go by.
"Boy, AWCY? sure is dumb" is a tired premise. Making fun of pretentious artists is like shooting fish in a barrel. This strikes me as an exercise in setting up a straw man and then having a sensible chuckle at its inadequacies, more than any sort of meaningful commentary on anything.
I can understand why you don't like it which is fair enough, but I feel compelled to tell you that is not the premise I came up with at all. It was more like 'what happens in AWCY? if someone submits an ordinary item', as the first bit of this tale is mostly based on the discussion thread on the GoI format. The rest is just a good ol' murder mystery, I didn't create this out of malice.
Whatever premise you intended, the result is that AWCY? engages in a silly debate about whether an ordinary park bench is art, complete with over-analyzed and emotionally charged reactions. Which I guess is a commentary of some sort on the discussion thread, which itself was kind of silly.
That's mainly my issue. What I get out of this is that wow, art sure can be silly sometimes (a conclusion that's been reached plenty of times before), along with more than a little smug irony. I have no reason to doubt you when you say that it's not intended out of malice, and I don't get a malicious vibe off of it. But there's a sort of facile, slightly sneering quality to this that I don't really care for.
Yeah, this is way better, I knew this would make for a good tale. :)
As I said when you were drafting this, this is either insanely subtle in its anomaly, or simple good.
I'm gonna wistfully glance at the former. +1
Very nice follow-through on the original GOI-Format. As I mentioned in that discussion: for this kind of 'statement-making' art, I think the audience reaction is the truly interesting part.
Furthermore, I like how you spliced in the details of the artist's fate after submitting their piece. So, more than just a collection of art reviews to supplement the original article, this one also also has its own story to tell.
