Thanks to CaptainKirby, DarkStuff, Westrin and NineVolt for taking a look at this in chat. Not 100% sure about this, but let’s see if people like it! There is something going on here, but it’s a mystery
This was on the lower end of novote territory for me until I finally realized what what going on. +1
Novote - I was engaged enough to spend some time thinking about the specifics of what might have happened, but the 'mundane thing described in an obtuse way' as the basis for a mystery (eg SCP-3154) is becoming a little played out.
Gonna have to novote this one, although it's far from downvote territory. I just feel that this is a fairly played-out concept, like ModernMajorGeneral said, to the point where it was fairly clear to me from the moment I read "roughly star-shaped bodily structure" I had a pretty good idea of what was going on, which turned out to be right. Prior to that, I wasn't sure if you were going to go with "reality has been drastically altered at some point in the future and the normal humans like us are now weird" or "reality has been drastically altered at some point in the past and we are the weird new humans." I guess I can't say if it would have been better or worse to go with the second one over the first.
Either way, the article certainly stands on its own, but I also feel that it's kind of a lackluster implementation of this same (admittedly perfectly good) idea that has been explored before, and as a result, I think I can't quite give it my upvote.
"A small muscle present within what is presumed to be the organism's cavities, which evidence suggests could be controlled freely."
:p
Well this was a pretty major reality restructuring to radically retcon most of evolutionary history. I'm assuming the people inside the Scranton Box committed suicide because they were in a radically alien world, but I'm not sure that quite fits with the Foundation's Mandate or overall spirt d'corps.
I would hope the reason for suicide was to reduce chance of contamination from them to the new baseline. For example, they deleted all the data correct? They didn't want the new humans to know that they were new, whatever happened was so drastic it could not be undone. So instead they provided the gift of ignorance.
It's well written, yes, but I can only repeat the above cincerns that this exact "twist" has become so overused that it'd be more of a twist if they'd all been turned into aliens.

Uh oh.
- A roughly star-shaped bodily structure.
- Two primary limbs, presumably used for object manipulation.
- Two secondary limbs, presumably used for ambulation.
Ohhhhh noooo.
I loved this and I loved the feeling it gave me as I was reading it. Maybe there are other objects that play with a similar concept, but I can't remember having seen enough of them to consider something like this being 'played-out'. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough?
Regardless, whether or not there are others that have the same sort of gimmick, I still enjoyed this enough to upvote it, so +1.
What happened? does the box really too good at its job its even contained something that probably a possible creature with humanlike ability?
