The Ideas and Brainstorming Forum is supposed to be, like, a jumping off point for loose ideas.. I think the Pet Rock fad can be turned for an article, probably.
Just building off Zyn's responses, I could see potential for:
1 The Emotional Angle

If that were literally any other kind of pet that would be super sad. If pet rocks were a real species of living animal that went extinct when their fad died out? All doomed once people thought they were dumb and stopped caring about them? Except for one surviving herd kept in Foundation captivity or whatever.
#2 Mysterious And/Or Ominous Horror Angle

I don't know how many people have ever owned pet rocks, but I imagine not enough to make surveillance through them viable.
OR..! Did they work so well that they served their purpose within a few years and were discontinued so the extraterrestrials could proceed with… Phase 2? And that was a few decades ago, so the implications can be pretty big, if that's the spin the writer wants to take with it.
Long story short, I think there's potential if the concept is explored a certain compelling way. I'll maybe edit more ideas in later, if i think of anything
