SCP Foundation

The summary pretty above much is what I have in mind: Some scientist from a parallel universe tries to travel between universes, something goes wrong, and his sentient heat signature is all that remains, doomed to wander around some forest for all of eternity.

I have a bit of backstory planned out for how the Foundation would discover it.

Ideally, I'd want to evoke sadness in readers, or maybe pity for the scientist. Some things I'd like help with include:

• Is it a good base idea?
• How would the Foundation research this thing?
• How would they connect the heat signature to a scientist from a parallel universe? (Should I change that?)

The base concept isn’t terrible, though you want to make sure the words “Dr. Who Expy” never enter your readers’ minds. That said, it’ll be difficult to do a pathos-based narrative with a character that doesn’t talk. You could perhaps go minimalist with some vague hints at extra-universality and the implications therein, but it would definitely be a difficult line to walk. Without impeccable execution, it would either come off as melodramatic, confusing, or just not engaging.

Alternatively, you could arrange “dialogue” in the form of sign language from the heat ghost. I’d advise making the character’s grasp of it rather loose, as that would give you some leeway with pacing and keeping some details ambiguous. Nothing more boring than a straight exposition dump.
