SCP Foundation

My most recent SCP draft involves an organism that makes a sort of barking/screeching noise (think the velociraptors in Jurassic Park when they are communicating with each other). However, I'm not sure how to exactly describe this noise without comparing it to Jurassic Park or using vague terminology. Also, I'm not sure if this is the right forum category for this question, so if it's not feel free to let me know. Thank you in advance!

Onomatopoeia are sort of up to the author. To be honest, I'd probably just call it a screech. You could put in a "described as 'a barking, shrieking, horrible noise.'"

For a reader to understand a description of the noise. They have to have a frame of reference that ties to something they already understand. That's probably why the author of "Cousin Johnny" Opted for the cicada noise. Everyone knows what a cicada sounds like so there's no need to make an elaborate description that could confuse the reader.
