I’m not a cop, and you won’t be getting a lawyer.
This was an unexpected little "Oh shit." moment I had while reading this. It's subtle, but it really nails the impression that in regards to the normal world, the Foundation is a giant in disguise, much bigger than regular people could ever imagine, and that what works or could potentially disrupt normal people and their normal affairs don't mean shit to the Foundation.
It's also a dawning moment for Thomas. He knows, or is at least tangentially aware, that his bat is abnormal and 'magical'. And now he knows that other people know, and they're probably not normal either. I can easily imagine Thomas' uncomfortable pause is him just going in his head, "Oh fuck, I might be in real trouble."
It's a fantastic line, and it really really goes to show that anything can work if it's well presented. It's just a bat that blows up living things with no explanation about its origins and a description two text blocks long. But even though it's a small gem, it's very well-cut. I thought the interview was perfect, the escalating test logs held my interest, and that last one, while goofy, was really unexpected and made me laugh.
